The University of Louisiana Lafayette (ULL) School of Architecture and Design hosted a student boot camp event on November 7, 2016. The program, “Beyond the Degree: How to Build a Strong Foundation for Your Interior Design Career,” was presented by a panel of four interior design industry experts, including two IIDA Delta Regional Chapter board members, Dru Lamb, NCIDQ, IIDA, LEED AP, Herman Miller and Heidi Meibaum, IIDA, Sales Representative, Arc|Com.

The purpose of the boot camp, which is a traveling version of the Camp offered annually at NeoCon, is to offer students personal access to interior design industry professionals who can share knowledge and answer questions about how to hit the ground running with their newly earned degree. Students learn firsthand what firms are looking for in entry-level designers as well as trends that are driving industry hiring practices in addition to how to land an internship, develop mentor-mentee relationships, and wow potential employers with a portfolio that will stand out from the crowd.

The boot camp was very well attended with over 40 students. Panelists included Dru Lamb, IIDA Delta Regional President, Heidi Meibaum, Director, IIDA Delta Regional, Justine Hebbert, Owner and Designer, and Kellie Searcy of Kelly Searcy Interiors LLC. The event was moderated by Ryan Ben, Student Engagement and Advancement Manager at IIDA National Headquarters. Ryan stated, “the event was a huge success and IIDA Headquarters looks forward to working with the new ULL IIDA Campus Center. Having one-on-one access to four career interior design professionals is an invaluable resource that we are pleased to help bring to students,” said Ryan. The new campus center will be formally sanctioned after the holidays but already includes 29 student members.

After the panel discussion, Cheryl Durst, IIDA Executive Vice President and CEO, gave a state-of-the-industry presentation to a broader design audience and shared her insights about the industry and how students can launch a successful design career.
